The Greystones estate is supposedly haunted by a monk who drifts amongst the trees, having died of a broken heart after the tragic death of his lover. His ghost was said to have been last seen in 1989 by an American journalist who saw his brown-robed figure drifting behind the house.

Fright Corner is home to the ghost of a highwayman who met his end by an oak tree. Witnesses have reported seeing his body slumped against a ghostly tree, pinned by a large sword through his chest. Ouch.

Elsewhere in Europe, it’s hardly surprising that Bran in Romania wins the crown as the creepiest place on the continent. A Transylvanian commune, the village was the inspiration behind the home of Count Dracula.

Though Bram Stoker, the Irish creator of this fictitious blood-sucking beast, never visited Romania, he created Dracula’s imaginary home based upon a description of the famous Bran Castle.
